Take a walk on the warm sandy beaches
Our guide to the best beaches in Portugal
The Algarve is home to some of the best beaches in the world and is regularly voted as the best beach destination in Europe. What makes the beaches even more special is the huge variety on offer. From cove beaches which can only be accessed by sea, to enormous sandy beaches that stretch for miles, to the dramatic and impressive rock formations that frame the land and meet the sea. One of the best ways to see many of the beaches in The Algarve is by selecting one of the many boat trips which are available to book from marinas all year round.
PRAIA DA QUINTA DO LAGO
The Praia da Quinta beach is very popular with tourists and is in the heart of the Ria Formosa Nature Park. Access to the beach is via a 300-metre-long wooden bridge across the reed plantations in the estuary. From here, you can enjoy the coming and going of the tides, the mudflats with their typical marshland vegetation, the shellfish gatherers going about their business and, if you are lucky, gracious flamingos next to the shining saltpans.

This beach is a prime bird watching area with a nature trail in the immediate vicinity. The high point of which is the observatory on the San Lourenço Lake, from which you can watch mallards, Eurasian coots and purple swamphens, among other species.

There are several golf courses, fantastic restaurants and five star hotels nearby which make Praia da Quinta an attractive tourist location.
PRAIA DO ANCÃO
Praia do Ancão boasts a seemingly endless stretch of golden sands that sits roughly halfway between Faro and Quarteira. Within the so-called ‘Golden Triangle’, Praia do Ancão is one of the best beaches in the Algarve. With so much space on offer, visitors can find their own little idyls and enjoy a peaceful getaway.
PRAIA DA FALÉSIA
Praia da Falésia is one of the most popular beaches in the Algarve. The sunset parties that are organized on this beach during summer months attract many people looking for a fun way to celebrate summer. The beach is characterised by its incredible red cliffs and even if you are not a beach lover, this beach is definitely worth a visit.

Praia da Falésia beach made it to the list of the Top 25 Beaches in the World by TripAdvisor’s 2025 Traveler’s Choice and is the only beach from Portugal that has entered the list. Visitors to the beach enjoy its beauty and diversity. The orange rocks contrast beautifully with green pines and dark blue skies to make this one of the most memorable beaches in Portugal. Praia da Falésia is a very clean beach and has consistently earned the Blue Flag Beach title.
PRAIA DE VALE DO LOBO
For a taste of the high life, head down to Vale do Lobo beach located within the heart of the Golden Triangle. Vale do Lobo is one of the best beaches in the Algarve for some celebrity spotting with sporting stars, TV personalities, models and the odd Hollywood A-lister all known for choosing Vale do Lobo beach to soak up some rays in the Algarve.

Praia de Vale do Lobo is part of a large strip of sand that runs from Praia de Faro in the east to Praia de Quarteira in the west.
PRAIA DO FAROL
This beach can be found on Ilha do Farol (which directly translates to the Island of the Lighthouse), named because of Cabo de Santa Maria’s Lighthouse which was built on the island in 1851. Praia do Farol is one of the quietest beaches in the Algarve. With extensive white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and an incredible desert island feel, you can enjoy a fantastic day trip at this beach.

The only way to access Ilha do Farol is by boat and the most frequent connections are from Olhão and from Faro. In the village of Farol you’ll find delightful houses, wonderful gardens and a few small coffee shops, all under the setting of the stunning lighthouse.
PRAIA DO BARRIL
Praia do Barril is located on the island of Tavira and is undoubtedly one of the most relaxing beaches in the Algarve. With its silvery white sand and transparent blue sea, Praia do Barril beach is located about 5 kilometres from the town of Tavira.

Praia do Barril is mostly visited by families with children and tourists. Historically, life on Praia do Barril revolved around tuna and there were about 80 fishermen who lived close to the beach with their families. The old buildings that were used by the tuna fishermen are now converted into restaurants, bars and other facilities. Praia do Barril combines a beautiful beach with the charm of an old fishing village.
PRAIA DA ROCHA
Praia da Rocha is the main beach for Portimão and has been a popular destination for visitors since tourism first began in the region. This is a large, long beach, that runs all along the front of the Praia da Rocha resort up to the Portimão marina.

There are some beautiful rock formations along the beach, hence the name which means beach of the rock. However, it’s the sheer size and options for sports, surfing, boat trips, cafes, restaurants and even nightclubs on the beach that make this a real hit with all ages. From Portimão and other nearby towns, you can take a boat trip to several different areas along the Algarve coast to explore some of sea caves the region is known for. Among the possible tours is a boat ride through Benagil Cave in Lagoa, one of the most-visited attractions in the region, and the nearby Praia da Marinha.
